RATS & MICE

Why Rats and Mice are a Nuisance

Given the rat population and the mouse population in the UK, they are a common
pest to deal with. There are several ways that they can get into your property and so
rodent control is something that many of us deal with at some point in our lives.
The most common rats that you are likely to come across are the brown rat, also known as the Norway
rat, common rat, street rat, water rat, and more names and the black rat, also known as a roof rat, ship
rat, and house rat. With mice, the most common is the house mouse.

What makes them such a pain is that rats and mice can multiply quickly. It isn’t just about the numbers
either. Rats and mice can spread numerous diseases. In addition to health risks, they also cause property
damage by chewing furniture, woodwork, and plasterboard. A huge risk is that they chew through
electrical wiring which has the potential to cause a fire. So, getting rid of rats and mice is imperative.

How to Spot a Rat or Mice Infestation

As with any pest control needs, it is unlikely that the first signs will be seeing the pest. Rats and mice
tend to be nocturnal and so you may hear them at night well before seeing them. As they are unlikely to
venture out during the day you may notice signs of their unwelcome presence because of rat or mouse
droppings or chew marks around the property. If you suspect a rodent problem then you can test areas
of the property by sprinkling flour, particularly near potential food sources, and then checking in the
morning for footprints. Whatever the rodent issue getting rid of rats and mice quickly is important.

What you can do

If you know or suspect, you have a rodent problem then it is important to regularly wipe down any
surfaces where you prepare food, this is particularly important if you have children and pets.
Of course, you can visit a store or purchase mouse traps and rat traps online. But would you know which
to get? Do you want snap traps or live traps? Some places sell glue traps which are cruel and should only
ever be used as a last resort. Despite being cruel in nature glue traps may be needed, especially when
the risk to you is as severe as a house fire. If you notice holes, then cover them with steel wool so
rodents cannot chew through. The best thing you can do is call a professional pest control company like
Pest Interceptors

What we can do

We will carry out a comprehensive investigation to establish the extent of the infestation. This helps
locate the source or location of the main issue. We will then look at the options and decide on the best
course of action. Whether this is through live traps used as baiting stations. Did you know that dry pet
food makes a good bait? We can decide between traps or bait. It could be that more than one approach
is needed. This is determined over several visits. Whenever possible we look to use the most
environmentally friendly products and most humane elimination approaches. We can also advise on
preventing the problem returning, you don’t want to be getting rid of rats and mice regularly.

Rats can infiltrate your home directly from sewers and drains. This is usually because rats can find any
breaks in pipes of poorly fitted pipe work. Once one rat finds its way out of the sewer and into your home, it leaves a trail of pheromones (chemical trail) that guides other rats into your home. For this reason, we are trained in the use of sewer cameras and can, more often than not, fix sewer pipes and drainage pipes that rats are using to come onto your premises.
